Government set to raise police standards
The State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Parliament, passed amendments to the Police Law in the first reading. The amendments stipulating additional recruitment restrictions were submitted by the pro-government United Russia party.
Under current legislation, no one with a previous conviction has the right to join the Russian police force. From now on, this provision will also apply to officers who have been prosecuted, but whose criminal cases were subsequently closed for various reasons, including the expiry of the statute of limitations, amnesty and active repentance. Those officers will be discharged.
The law aims to raise standards across the police force, said First Deputy State Duma Speaker Oleg Morozov. The document creates additional barriers preventing individuals with tarnished reputations from joining the Interior Ministry and makes it possible to sack them.
