The "Avatar" director met with NASA administrator Charles Bolden in a one-on-one meeting in January and even convinced the space agency to buy a 3-D cam.

"He actually was really open to the idea," Cameron said. "Our first meeting went very well."

The new cam is being built at the San Diego-based Malin Space Science Systems, but the Curiosity team isn"t sure the new camera will be ready in time.

The roaring success of James Cameron"s movie Avatar led television into a new dimension. The sci-fi blockbuster, shot in 3D, has surpassed Titanic to become the highest grossing film of all time.
