The shroud is a linen cloth bearing the facial image of a man thought to have died after torture that included crucifixion. Christians believe the body of Jesus Christ was wrapped up in the Shroud, after which his image remained on it.

"The Holy Shroud eloquently reminds us" of Jesus" suffering, Pope Benedict said.

Ahead of his visit to Turin, he told followers that the shroud "mirrors our suffering in the suffering of Christ."

The Holy Shroud is on public display in Turin Cathedral in a bullet-proof and climate-controlled case for six weeks since April 10.

Over two million people are expected to view it.
